NORTH TONAWANDA – The Nor-Ton Red Jacket Club, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to maintaining and preserving Donald F. Miller Park in the city, has been awarded an $8,000 grant from the East Hill Foundation. The funds will be used to purchase a commercial-grade lawn mower to maintain the park.
The North Tonawanda-based East Hill Foundation considers grant applications from qualified organizations that address community needs and opportunities designed to enhance the quality of life for residents of Western New York. The foundation has interests in art and culture, education, youth, social needs, civic issues and animal protection. Giving is primarily focused within the eight counties of Western New York.
The Nor-Ton Red Jacket Club’s members are committed to helping young people develop inner strength through health and fitness, leadership and teamwork, and an appreciation for the environment. As part of this mission, volunteers operate and maintain Donald F. Miller Park in order to provide low-cost outdoor educational experiences to area youth.
Over the years, the Nor-Ton Red Jacket Club has established strong relationships with local schools and youth groups, allowing the groups to use the park for meetings, daytime programs and weekend retreats.
Last year, the club served 3,130 youth, creating a wide range of programs, including snowshoeing, fishing, orienteering, geocaching with GPS, team building, games, canoeing, kayaking and constellation observation.
