LOCKPORT – New sidewalks along East High Street and Locust Street Extension, leading to George Southard Elementary School and Emmet Belknap Intermediate School, may be installed this fall, Town Supervisor Marc R. Smith said at Wednesday’s meeting of the Town Board.

The board approved an agreement for a $570,000 state grant to pay for the work.

Smith said once final engineering is done, the town will seek bids for a contractor to install the sidewalks.

The board also voted to apply for a $500,000 state grant to pay for the construction of five medians along South Transit Road between the Lockport Mall and Robinson Road.

Unlike the sidewalk grant, the town will have to come up with a $100,000 match if the funding is approved.

The board also approved $4,800 to participate in a county study of rural high-speed Internet availability and $1,590 for signs naming Debbie Gaskill Soccer Fields in Day Road Park and the Wesley F. Arnold Town Court.

Gaskill, a former councilwoman, was one of the founders of Lockport’s youth soccer program. Arnold, who died Jan. 31, was a town justice for 26 years.
