LOCKPORT – Learn more about the world champion Buffalo Germans Basketball team when Melissa Dunlap makes a presentation at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Niagara County History Center, 215 Niagara Street.

Long before the undefeated 1960 United States Olympic basketball team and the 1992 Dream Team were inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010, there was another outstanding Olympic basketball team, and this one was from Buffalo. Led by center and manager Alfred “Allie” Heerdt, and known throughout most of its history as the Buffalo Germans, this squad began playing at the Buffalo YMCA. The team went on to become world champions, collecting an astounding string of 111 consecutive wins.

Dunlap is executive director of the Niagara County Historical Society and has a personal connection to the Buffalo Germans – her husband was Heerdt’s grandson.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the History Center at 434-7433.
