LEWISTON – Have a green thumb? How about a flair for baking or shooting photos? The Lewiston Recreation Department is looking for contestants of all ages to enter their works in the Lewiston Country Fair on Saturday.
The fair, along with a Community Yard Sale, will be held at the Lewiston Red Brick School, 145 N. Fourth St.
Registration for competition in the fair will be held from 8:45 to 10 a.m., with judging from 10 to 11 a.m. Entry forms are available at village offices or the Recreation Department.
A new category for the fair’s photography contest this year is for the best photo taken this year in the village. “You have to be able to tell it’s been taken in Lewiston, and it can be taken with a digital camera, but not digitally enhanced,” said Marianne L. Gittermann, the village’s recreation director.
In addition, only one photo entry per photographer is permitted in this category. Photos may be black and white or color and must be at least 5 by 7 inches and matted or framed. Applications for this contest may be found at www.villageoflewiston.net.
In the gardening/farming division, competition categories include vegetables (large pumpkins welcomed) and flowers (currently blooming, dried arrangements and houseplants). All must be grown by the entrants.
Amateur bakers must make everything from scratch, and ingredients must be listed and cannot include items such as instant pudding or cake mixes. Categories include cakes, pies, cookies and miscellaneous.
There also is a relish and jam competition, which includes pickles, salsa and relishes, jams and preserves. The ingredients of the relishes and jams must be listed.
Families and individuals are invited to create and submit a scarecrow for the “Avenue of Scarecrows” and compete for the top honor.
There also will be a contest in the craft category. Crafts to be judged include painting, wood, woodcarving, Native American beading, card-making, needlework, quilts, sewing (no clothing), decorative wreaths, crafts using rubber stamps, scrapbook pages, collages and miscellaneous.
Live entertainment will be featured at the fair, including “A Step in Time” from 10 a.m. to noon; the Niagara Frontier Fiddle Club from noon to 2 p.m.; and “Another Thyme” from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Lewiston Junior Garden Club will host “Make Your Own Arrangement” from 11:30 a.m. until supplies run out. All supplies for this event are free.
With help from the Historic Association of Lewiston, the Recreation Department also will showcase historic postcards from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the fair. The postcards have been enlarged for the event and will be shown in the gym.
A “bounce house” will be available from noon to 2 p.m., and a petting zoo will be featured from 1 to 3 p.m.
The event is free and open to residents and nonresidents. It will be held rain or shine.
