LEWISTON – The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission is planning a series of commemorative activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and the 75th anniversary of the commission itself.
The celebration has been launched with the creation of an official website, ww.niagarafallsbridges75.com, which will provide logos, downloadable poster art, weekly advisories and updated photos.
A special fireworks display will be held over the Horseshoe Falls next month on a date to be announced.
The celebration also will include special anniversary T-shirts, with sales benefiting regional food banks; the unveiling of a Lewiston-Queenston Bridge oil painting; educational outreach to local schools; sharing of historic images; commemorative displays at participating duty-free stores; and formal commendations.
The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission was created in 1938 by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress to build and operate the Rainbow Bridge. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of England formally dedicated the Rainbow Bridge during their royal visit June 7, 1939.
Licensed through Ontario’s Extra Provincial Corporations Act, the commission later assumed operations of the Whirlpool Rapids (Lower) Bridge and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.
The commission also builds and maintains all facilities for customs and immigration at the bridges on both sides of the border.
