A film noir set in Buffalo and featuring Matthew Broderick and Janeane Garofalo will begin filming in the area later this month.

“The American Side” is slated to film from July 29 to Aug. 23, according to two sources who did not want to be identified.

The Buffalo News learned last year that the indie film will feature iconic Buffalo locations, including the Skyway, a grain elevator and Niagara Falls. The plot also incorporates Nikola Tesla, an inventor in the 1800s who introduced hydroelectric technology to the falls.

Earlier this week, television show “Top Gear” took over the Skyway to film three vehicles performing wheel spins and dramatic turns. Buffalo’s scenery and architectural assets have become more popular with production crews searching for fresh areas to film, said Tim Clark, head of the Buffalo Niagara Film Commission.

“The intangible stuff is that you get to see Buffalo portrayed on the big screen. It does help boost tourism and makes people aware that Buffalo is a really pretty place,” Clark said.

The local economy benefits when production crews roll into town and spend on props, hotel rooms and restaurants Clark said, citing the recent filming of the movie “Best Man Holiday.” By the end of the movie’s five-day filming stretch, $1 million had been spent in Western New York, he said.
