YOUNGSTOWN – The Porter on the Lake Park Summerfest returns June 29 after a one-year hiatus.

The family event is slated for 2 to 10 p.m. at the park on Dietz Road, off Route 18.

The festival will feature food, beer and wine vendors, as well as local music provided by WhaTheFolk, the Second Amendment, the Lakeside Blues Band and the JB Aaron Band and Trouble. Pony rides, face-painting and a bounce house will be available for children from 3 to 6 p.m. The evening will conclude at about 9:30 p.m. with fireworks over Lake Ontario.

“We have the same people doing the fireworks that we had two years ago, the Skylighters, and they had the most spectacular fireworks I think I’ve ever seen,” said Jeff Baker, one of the event organizers. “I expect no less this year. They do a phenomenal job.”

Baker, a Town of Porter councilman, and his wife, Gloria, are organizing the event with fellow Councilman Larry White and White’s wife, Linda.

All proceeds benefit the Porter on the Lake Park.

“We are trying to make park improvements,” said Baker. “We’ve been looking at playground equipment with plastic slides, swings and monkey bars. An idea my wife and I had was to get side curtains for the main pavilion, so it could be utilized later in the fall or if it was raining. We’d like something with clear panels so the view of the lake isn’t obstructed, that could be rolled up and down.”

“We also need to replace some picnic tables,” he added. “This is the town’s only park, and it’s a great place, but it’s underutilized.”

The Lake Park Summerfest, which will be held rain or shine, is sponsored by the Town of Porter and the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce.

Baker said they are still looking for volunteer help for the event, particularly at the gates. Anyone interested may contact the Chamber at 754-9500.

“Two years ago, this was a great event, and then they took a break last year to focus attention on the Founder’s Day celebration in Porter,” said Jennifer Pauly, Chamber president. “It’s exciting that the event is returning. It’s a great day of music and a nice event for families. … Part of our mission as a Chamber is to help our communities, and we have been happy to help secure sponsors and bands to help raise money to make improvements to the park.”

Admission is $5 per adult, while children 12 and younger are free.

Major sponsors of the event include CWM Chemical Services, Modern Corp., Sevenson Environmental Services, Mark Cerrone Inc., Certo Brothers Distributing Co., Tedesco Construction Services, Wendel Duchscherer Architects and Engineers, First Niagara Bank, attorney Michael Dowd, Ken Young Paving, Brown & Company, D.T Truesdell Trucking and George and Mary Osborne.
