It’s fair to say that Sandra Bernhard’s approach to comedy – an uncommon mix of musical performances and sassy topical observations, all wrapped up in sort of tongue-in-cheek bravado – sets her apart from most other working humorists.
Western New Yorkers will have a chance to experience Bernhard’s trademark fusion of music and comedy at 8 p.m. Friday when she visits the Riviera Theatre (67 Webster St., North Tonawanda) to perform her latest one-woman show “I Love Being Me, Don’t You?” She started her career on “The Richard Pryor Show” in the late ’70s and co-starred in the 1983 film “The King of Comedy” before going on to a storied and successful entertainment career. She has appeared in places as disparate as the sitcom “Roseanne” and the documentary “Truth or Dare.”
In a review of her recent show, Los Angeles Times critic Charles McNulty described her as “a walking, talking blogger before blogs were invented” and went on to say that “Bernhard doesn’t tell jokes so much as humorously riff, a style that helped pave the way for the rambling hilarity of Kathy Griffin.”
Tickets are $35 to $40. Call 692-2113 or visit www. rivieratheatre.org.
