NORTH TONAWANDA- – The rusted steel frame of the aging water slide at Payne Park Memorial Pool will be spiffed up, sandblasted and repainted for the summer swimming season.
The Common Council approved a $62,000 contract to do the work with low bidder Erie Painting and Maintenance at its meeting Tuesday night.
The Buffalo company will paint after the slide’s wood rails and decking are removed, said Dale Marshall, city engineer. The steel frame – its rust accelerated by chlorinated pool water – will be examined and repaired before the painting.
“It really has not had any attention in its lifetime,” Marshall said. He hopes the fiberglass slide, erected at the pool in 1988, will be ready by the end of June when the pool officially opens for summer.
“That gives us about two months. I think we can get it done,” he said. “We need some good weather, too.”
Also at the meeting, the council:
• Approved four free summer rock concerts on Webster Street to be organized by Greg Doel, owner of Crazy Jake’s restaurant: July 6, July 13, July 27 and August 3.
• Approved an agreement with Niagara River Cruises. The new tourist boat company will dock on the Erie Canal near Remington Tavern at 184 Sweeney Street.
• Discussed the city’s eighth annual shoreline cleanup, “Canal Clean Sweep,” Saturday at 9 a.m. at Mayor’s Park on Sweeney Street. The city project, still in need of volunteer helpers, is one of a series of community efforts to pick up trash along the 524-mile canal system. “It’s always cold and it’s crummy, but it’s a lot of fun,” he said.
