Gun owners challenging New York State’s new gun-control law are asking a Buffalo judge to stop the state from enforcing the measure.

In a motion filed this week, the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, the state affiliate of the National Rifle Association, asked U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny to approve an injunction against the SAFE Act.

The group, which filed suit against the state last month, claims the new law violates the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms.

The new law, adopted after the shootings in Newtown, Conn., adopts stricter prohibitions against assault-style weapons, increases registration requirements and requires mental health professionals to report the names of clients they deem to be a threat to themselves or others.
